Discount fitness chain Pure Gym could open its first Wirral branch at a Bidston retail park under new plans.
The Derwent Group has filed a change of use planning application to convert a former retail unit at Junction 1 Retail Park into a 24-hour gymnasium.
Two spaces remain vacant at the shopping centre, with units one to seven hosting retailers and eight and nine empty. The latter is being lined up for Pure Gym to occupy.
The introduction of a mezzanine floor and associated works to elevational treatments and minor adjustments to car park layout would be carried out if Wirral Council approves the plans.
A report issued to the council reads: “Planning permission is sought to convert the vacant retail unit to a 24-hour gymnasium which is to be operated by Pure Gym. Pure Gym is the UK’s largest gym group with over 150 branches throughout the country providing affordable but high quality fitness facilities.
“The closest Pure Gym facilities are currently in Liverpool and Chester, and as part of its continuing expansion, the company is now seeking representation in Bidston which will be its first branch in the Wirral administrative area.”
Estimated to create between 20 and 30 full and part-time jobs, the Wirral Pure Gym would be open 24 hours a day and offer flexible membership in the absence of fixed-term contracts.
