Veteran news presenter backs Liverpool’s Channel 4 bid

Jon Snow, the lead anchor of Channel 4 News, has backed Liverpool’s bid to be the new home of Channel 4 outside of London.

The veteran news presenter has put his weight behind the city’s campaign alongside stars from film and stage as well as leaders in education, business and politics.

Channel 4‘s search for a location will be the biggest structural change in the broadcaster’s 35-year history, including three new “creative hubs”, with the largest to be a new national HQ that will have facilities including a TV studio and host executive and board meetings.

The channel is to choose its shortlist of bidding cities on Wednesday 30 May.

Former University of Liverpool student Jon says: “As one who lived in Liverpool as a student and has had links as a former Tate Trustee and current chair of Tate Members, I am an enthusiast for the city.

“If I had influence in the matter of where Channel 4’s new out of London centre was to be I’d pitch for Liverpool. Sadly I have absolutely none! But that does not prevent me from living in hope!”

David Yates, director of the final four Harry Potter films and Fantastic Beasts, Liverpool-born actress Alison Steadman and multi award-winning writer Jimmy McGovern have joined Jon in pledging their support for the bid.

Meanwhile, Liverpool Wavertree MP Luciana Berger has tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) noting Liverpool’s bid and “the positive impact of the employment and training opportunities this move could provide the city, and the wider North West”.

It has so far been co-signed by Liverpool MPs Stephen Twigg, Maria Eagle and Louise Ellman as well as Wirral South MP Alison McGovern and Cheshire’s Weaver Vale MP Mike Amesbury.

To underline the support the city has received across the city’s cultural sector, a series of video interviews haven been filmed which include celebrated designer Wayne Hemingway and acclaimed Art School head chef Paul Askew.
