Vue is to acquire Manchester’s Odeon Printworks cinema following a ruling by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
The 20-screen multiplex was originally to be purchased by AMC Acquisition Ltd before the watchdog scuppered the deal over fears it could compromise competition in the local market.
AMC already operates the Great Northern, a 16-screen multiplex, in Manchester while Odeon has several sites across the city.
It was feared that Manchester cinemagoers could have been hit by “increased ticket prices” or “reduced quality or service” as a result of this merger.
The CMA warned AMC that it would face an in-depth investigation unless concerns over the acquisition’s affect on competition were remedied, with the company offering to sell the Printworks cinema to Vue in response.
A CMA spokesperson says: “After considering responses to a formal consultation, the CMA has concluded that AMC’s offer is sufficient to address the CMA’s concerns.”
